Mastering your emotions can help you eat less
If we can master our emotions we’ll be less likely to eat junk food. (Which is why I spend so much time writing and talking and thinking about happiness.)
If you can work on ways to become happier, you’ll be setting yourself up for success!
All we ever hear as a kid is “stop crying,” or “relax,” or “calm down,” or “everything will be alright!” Other than being told to suppress our emotions has anyone ever told us how to actually deal with complex emotions?
When our mind floods with emotions we might feel panicky, upset, anxious or angry. How about feelings like rage, loneliness, abandonment, shame? These feelings can be horrifying.
The challenge with feelings and thoughts is that we can’t control them. There are a lot of new age books that suggest we ‘let go of our ego’ and all sorts of things like this.
The reality is I can’t control my thoughts. They just pop into my head. As do feelings.
If we were going to a gorgeous island that was beaming with sun we’d go prepared. And that’s all we can do in this case, too.
We need to prepare ourselves for when we’re sad, anxious, angry, etc.
What if you had a secret stash of things to do or look at or people to call when certain feelings came about? The idea here is to figure out ways to deal with your emotions.
Not eat them.
To actually face them head on!
As opposed to getting off the highway at a rest stop, we want to drive right through our feelings and emotions! We don’t want to stop and then have to deal with them later on because they will keep resurfacing.
Certainly living at a rest stop is not realistic!
Like clouds, and weather and so many other things in our lives, feeling and emotions do pass!
You must, we must, remember this!
So what are you going to do?
Stop at the fast food joint on the highway or drive right through them into the gorgeous sunset?
Thoughts? I'd love to hear them! Share them with me on Twitter or on our feedback page.
