What if you were born TODAY?

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

I hope everyone on the East Coast is okay from the hurricane. I know some of us are still without power. What a crazy week we’ve had! First it was an Earthquake and then it was a hurricane.

I often think about babies (relax mom, I know you want more grandkids). And it’s amazing to me that we all start off as a blank slate loaded with nothing BUT potential. Sure, we have our natural temperament – but we’re also who we are because of our surrounding environments. Our fears, hopes, and dreams are all impacted by this.

What if somehow, someway, our memory of our selves was erased?

We wouldn’t have any limiting beliefs or self defeating thoughts…

All of our failures, screw ups and mistakes would be gone from our brain.

In fact, no matter what our past has been like, we have a SPOTLESS future.

Sounds amazing right?

Of course, having our memories erased is not doable. So…

Instead, I’m going on a vacation. I can REALLY use it after all the crazy weather. But I want you to join me on the vacation!

Well, I’m not really going on vacation. I’m taking a vacation from myself.

There are still many things I do that I want to change. Many habits, actions, etc.

**

For example, what’s the first thing you do when you have an intense craving for chocolate?

Do you give in? Or do you reach for fruit? What if for just a week or just for the next 2 days you only reached for fruit?

Do you wake up as early as you want to? What if for just the next 3 days you woke up a tad earlier?

Do you cook yourself a healthy breakfast? What if for just the next 3 days you made yourself a healthy breakfast?

Do you submit your Daily Feedback right after your last meal? What if for the next 5 days, as soon as you’re done with dinner you flossed, brushed your teeth, used mouth wash then did the dishes and then logged on and filled out your feedback? (Close that kitchen!)

What if you submitted your feedback even before dinner so you have to eat what you said you were going to eat!? (The more we can mentally rehearse what we’re going to eat, the better.)

Do you keep all of your promises? What if for just a week, you kept every promise you made to others AND yourself?

What if for just a week, you didn’t give in to any impulses and only ate whole, natural and real food?

Can I go on and on? Yes. But I think we get the point. I’m not asking you to do these things forever.

BUT, I’m asking you to try it for a week. 5 days! Actually, let’s make it for just the next TWO days.

And I want you to see how you feel after 2 days. We’re taking a vacation from ourselves!

So if you do something that you want to change, instead of talking about it or writing about it, let’s just be about it and THEN write about it! Starting this very moment!

Remember: act as if you were born today. Anything IS possible for the next two days. Why? We don’t know any better.

See you in paradise!

:)

P.S. Speaking of being born today, I’m EXTREMELY excited to welcome my second nephew, Myles Joseph to this crazy, amazing and miraculous game called life. He was born this morning and weighs 7 pounds. Thankfully, both my nephew and sister are doing great! :)

“Adam help me – I always feel hungry!”

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Many of you tell me that you always feel hungry.

Let’s explore:

First off, let’s ask ourselves this question while we’re thinking rationally: Is it possible to be hungry all the time?

Rationally, we know that it’s not possible to be hungry all the time. So what gives?

Well, most of the time it’s emotional hunger.

Real/physical hunger comes on gradually. Emotional hunger comes on suddenly. Real hunger can be satisfied with any food. Yes, that’s right – if an apple doesn’t satisfy our hunger, we’re not truly physically hungry.

Emotional hunger comes with a craving for a specific food. And, unfortunately, it’s usually not for apples. Ever have those times when you eat snack after snack and nothing seems to be hitting the spot? Well, that’s because you’re not physically hungry. You’re emotionally hungry.

When we get “hungry” it’s worth asking ourselves a few questions:

1. How long has it been since I’ve eaten?

2. What am I really hungry for?

3. Is anything bothering me?

4. If I had an ‘EASY’ button to magically help me with what I’m dealing with, right now, what would I use it for?

Perhaps, what you’re really hungry for is affection, assistance, rest, excitement, peace of mind…

Is it possible to have the need met by someone? How about by yourself?

Here’s the challenge: Many times we feel like our needs can’t or won’t get met – so food becomes our escape.

When we’re “hungry” that is a need we feel like we can actually control.

Sometimes, it can be very helpful to explore what it feels like to have the need go unmet by simply writing about it. Many clients have reported that this eases the discomfort tremendously.

This is also how you can find out what you might really want out of your life because typically we’d shovel food into our mouth so we don’t have to experience or face the feelings.

Because when we’re not suppressing feelings, they’ll come to the surface, and we’ll be able to see what it is we really want.

Food is ONLY love when it is used to feed our true physical hunger and we actually enjoy and relish and savor the experience. Otherwise, we’re using food to cover up feelings.

Feelings that are preventing us from becoming the person we really want to be.

How do you like them apples?

The dreaded F word

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

So many of us are terrified of…FAILING. In fact, even if we’re doing really well, the F word manages to sneak up and sometimes haunt us.

It’s as if we don’t expect to succeed (more on this another time). I get so many emails saying something along the lines of, “MBT is working so great for me…BUT…”

The BUT is the amazement at how well they’re doing that it almost feels WEIRD/scary because they’re so used to failing. First off, if we take ANYTHING day by by day, and even more so – meal by meal, it’s doable. We LOVE to get ahead of ourselves (this is a defense mechanism). There’s nothing we can do EXCEPT focus on today, and making our very next meal, and workout as good as it can be. Finally, I won’t let you fail. It’s NOT an option.

I totally understand. Failure is a scary thought, though!

So often we fail to take action because we’re afraid of what people will think.

Here’s a question: who exactly are “these” people?

Here’s an exercise: write them down (all of them!). When we take a look at this list, we realize that a majority of these people are acquaintances that hardly care.

Sorry but we shouldn’t flatter ourselves. We’re not that important to them.

So that leaves a small group of people who will care. But here’s the twist (there’s always a twist): you’re on those people’s list too.

Call it a truce and let’s get to work.

A VERY scientific term that could help you make better choices

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

I’d like to introduce you to a VERY scientific term I like to call: “The Difference”.

One of my favorite lunch foods is tuna. I grew up on it. It happens to be very healthy too. (Of course, like anything, moderation is key. Gotta watch out for the Mercury.)

On the weekends, I like to make myself some tuna salad. I add mayo and celery and sometimes carrots. It’s delicious!

Call me what you want…

When I was in 5th grade, I decided (under no one’s influence but mine) to cut out soda completely from my diet. What does a 5th grader who idolized Michael Jordan replace it with? Gatorade! And then in 6th grade, I realized how much sugar was in Gatorade so I limited my Gatorade intake to only when I was playing basketball, and drank water with everything else.

Around that time…

I heard about light mayo so I started using it. “Ohhh tuna and light mayo, this is unbeatable now!”

Or so I thought.

After a little while, I was no longer eating tuna fish. Why? I couldn’t stomach the taste of light mayo.

It took me a while to realize this but finally I chucked the light mayo and went back to regular mayo. Once again, I was as happy as ever with my tuna. :)

I realized “The Difference” right then and there. Some foods aren’t negotiable. Mayo happens to be one of them for ME (maybe not for you though).

But if you ask me to choose between a beef burger or turkey burger 90% of the time, I’m just as happy with the turkey burger.

If you ask me to choose between a whole wheat bun and regular bun, I’m just as happy with the whole wheat bun.

If you ask me to choose between frozen yogurt and ice cream, I’m just as happy with the frozen yogurt.

There’s many examples where the healthier version is just as good. Sometimes it’s even BETTER! Many times, “The Difference” isn’t all that different. And it’s definitely worth it to choose the healthier version.

And for some foods “The Difference” is NOT worth it. No matter what, I need the real deal version.

Is there a lighter version of something you eat?

Examples:

Egg whites instead of whole eggs?

Turkey bacon instead of regular bacon?

Baked chips instead of regular chips?

Dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate?

Turkey hot dogs instead of regular hot dogs

Baked chicken instead of fried chicken?

Skim milk instead of whole milk?

Think about that this week.

Seek “The difference” when possible!
