I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Just so you know…

It’s not IF we’ll indulge. It’s not IF we’ll eat more than we’d like to. It’s not IF we’ll have a lousy workout. It’s not IF we’ll miss a workout from time to time. It’s not IF we’re not as productive as planned. It’s not IF we’ll have a less than “perfect” day. It’s not IF we’ll get down knocked down…

It’s WHEN.

Because we all will.

And it happens!

It’s about one thing: How quick are you going to get back up?

Question: does this video (safe for work) inspire you as much as it inspires me?

What if every morning we watched a video like this to start off the day?

What if every morning we read a list of why we want to be healthy and fit?

**

To think you’ll never “mess up” is simply setting unrealistic expectations.

Why do we set unrealistic expectations?

Because it’s a defense mechanism…

If we can’t be “perfect” why bother, we think.

But we know perfection doesn’t exist. PROGRESS does though!

Aiming to never “mess up” is giving ourselves an easy out. An easy out from what you wonder?

Well, change is uncomfortable. There’s no way around that. (I sincerely believe (and know!) that having support and accountability makes it way more tolerable.)

So when the discomfort gets…uncomfortable…aiming for perfection gives us a way to escape the discomfort.

“Ah, I messed up! There goes perfection!”

“Screw it, I’m going to quit because I can’t do this…”

And just like that we escape the discomfort of even TRYING to change.

**

Instead of focusing on the discomfort, try to focus on WHY you want to be healthy and fit. And instead of aiming for 100% on every meal – aim for consistency.

“In baseball, my theory is to strive for consistency, not to worry about the numbers. If you dwell on statistics you get shortsighted, if you aim for consistency, the numbers will be there at the end.” – Tom Seaver

Do you feel entitled to eat whatever you want? Read this…

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

I have a client that feels she’s entitled to eat whatever she wants. HOWEVER, every time she does so she hates how she feels.

Let’s explore this a leeeettle bit…

Absolutely! We’re all entitled to eat whatever we want. We can eat 5 cookies or 1000 cookies a day. And guess what? No one can stop us!

But unfortunately (or fortunately) every single action we take has a consequence. Whether we take no action at all (that’s still an action) or do take action there is a consequence – which can be a good or bad one.

The consequence in this case?

Not only will we feel like crap afterward, but we’ll also hate how we look LATER.

Which leads us to the now versus later mentality. So many of us only think about today.

As Daniel Gilbert pointed out in his book Stumbling on Happiness the major difference between human beings and every other organism is that we think about the past, present and future.

Thinking about the future causes us to act differently. But so many of us ‘must’, ‘need’, ‘want’ to have that cookie now. But then when it comes time to get dressed up, or put on a bathing suit, or take our shirts off we scream and cry and hate how we look and feel…

Now versus later.

The only way to look good later is to eat healthy now. Of course, we can’t eat healthy later now because now is, well, now.

Just as much as we’re entitled to eat whatever we want, we’re entitled to feel however we want too. And if we feel we’re entitled to eat whatever we want now, we’re going to feel bad later on.

Another thing that really helps is to think about how you WANT to feel.

As I asked this client, “Have you ever felt better from eating junk than you have from eating healthy food?” She replied, “Of course not. I hate how I feel when I eat junk!”

Exactly. And until eating junk makes me feel better than eating healthy, I will keep doing what I do.

If you focus on how you want to feel, and think about how certain foods make us feel physically and mentally it becomes so much easier to say no to a 5 minute high as opposed to an all day high.

I will remind us of this. Food is only food. It’s not our best friend. It’s not our worst friend. It’s only food.

Living for food is unreliable. It’s a dysfunctional relationship because if we had a friend that made us feel awful after we spoke with him/her, and then made us feel guilty so we wanted to speak to him/her again to try to get rid of the awful feeling THEY gave us, we’d call that an abusive relationship.

Focus on how you WANT to feel. We’re absolutely entitled to eat whatever we want but remember every action has a consequence.

And that’s the key. Thinking BEFORE we eat. “How will this make me feel?”

The idea is to eat food that makes us feel good before (no trepidation), during (we feel empowered) and after (energized! NOT guilty) we eat it.

Worry often? Read this…

Monday, November 21st, 2011

Here’s my idea of what the purpose of our mind is:

1. I don’t think our mind was designed to make us worry. I think it was designed to make us fear. There’s a huge difference between running for our life because a lion is chasing us and worrying about finishing work on time or worrying about how your kids did on their spelling exam.

2. What is worrying anyway?

Worrying is a killer. If I can be Frank, it’s a motherf@#$@$!!!!

It leads to stress and anxiety, which truly wreaks havoc on our health and well being. (It also makes us want to eat sugar, salt and fat!) Worrying and anxiety is about repeatedly re-experiencing the worst case scenario in advance. What are we worrying about anyway? It didn’t happen yet!

3. I don’t think our mind was designed to think about the same things over and over. At least not thoughts that make us suffer. Or thoughts that impede us from…

4. Thinking of new things! Yes, that’s the purpose of the mind, in my very humble opinion.

For example, say, I think of a topic for an Inspiration (the very thing you’re reading right now). The old me would’ve acknowledged it and then forgotten about it.

Then, I’d try to remember it and struggle. And then it would come back to me at a weird time. Now, when I think of something productive, I write it down. Boom. Done. Out of my head. Onto the next thing…

5. When I keep thinking about things that hinder my ability to be the best I can be – it’s time to inquire within. Why? What can I do about it? Here’s the key: If I don’t deal with it, It’ll keep haunting me.

6. For example, say, I want to mail a thank you card. But I don’t do anything about it. I don’t add it to my to-do list, I don’t buy a card, nothing. It’s just renting space in my head and bothering me. Not good!

So, now, I just write it down. Boom. It’s done. It’s actionable. I don’t need to worry about it anymore. When thoughts like this are floating around in my head it’s very draining.

7. “You worry about thank you cards?” you wonder. I do. I’m weird. What can I say?

But what about ‘real things’ to worry about.

Ask yourself, “What are you afraid of?” Then follow with, “What’s the worst thing that can happen?” These 2 questions can help tremendously!

8. The purpose of the ‘3 outcomes Section’ on the Daily Feedback is so you don’t have to worry about tasks like mailing out a thank you card. Use it. It works like a charm.

Just pick 3 things that are floating around in your head and write them down so you get them out of your head already. And if they’re not actionable – just plain old things you worry about – go back to number 7 but try not to forget number one.

Gosh, I hope you liked this inspiration! :)

My MBT B’DAY – What a difference a year really does make

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

As I wrote here, on the top of my testimonials page, it reads: I have hundreds of thank you emails and testimonials. I wish I could have them all on this website but my web developer told me no. “People aren’t going to read them all,” he said. He’s right.

The secret is – they are more for me because these testimonials are why I do what I do!

It’s true. That IS why I do what I do. I’ve written about it on my other blog here.

I haven’t updated that testimonials page in a long time, and I have hundreds more I could add.

I do have them all filed away. But what FUN is that? Some of them are just too good not to share.

So, I’m going to start sharing some of them here from time to time.

Let’s get to it…

Susan, a 65 year old client, just sent me an email on this Tuesday morning here in NY.

She writes:

Adam:

This is my MBT birthday. I signed up one year ago and here I am 46 pounds lighter and immeasurably fitter. I remember that at the start, I used to put my fitness goal as walking for 15 minutes a couple of times a week.

I can easily do 60 minutes on the treadmill and have discovered the joys of the elliptical and the rowing machine! What can be next? I do my resistance program at least twice a week and have started noticing significant differences in my pecs and my waistline!

What a difference a year makes! Many thanks to your part in my transformation. I could not have done it without MBT!

-Susan
