Welcome To The Inspiration Archives!

What arguably the greatest boxer ever decided on that made ALL of the difference

Monday, December 12th, 2011

HA HA! I gotta laugh using Mike Tyson for inspiration fodder…

But as crazy as he is, he’s also a pretty deep guy.

Here is a story of his which I really like:

**

His then trainer Cus D’Amato, says to him, “Listen you have the chance to change your life, your family’s life, you can be very special. Don’t you want to be champion? You can be champion of the world”.

I didn’t pay no attention.

He said, “Really, you could be champion of the world. You could devastate the world. No man can take what you did, you got to believe it”.

I looked at this guy and then I started thinking, I said, this guy is really crazy, that’s what I said, this guy is really crazy. [Funny how Mike Tyson thought someone else was crazy!]

“You do what I tell you to do, and if it doesn’t work then, then you can leave”.

So I said OK.

I did everything he told me to do and I won, I won every championship. From the amateur championship, all the championships, so I won every championship because he told me what to do. And I started believing in this old man.

I stopped being a little thief. I use to go back to New York and rob people and come back upstate and hide out.

The day I stopped doing all that I changed my whole life. I said I’m gonna stick to this boxing shit.

I turned my whole life over to boxing. I turned into a complete animal, I turned into a disciplinarian.”

**

My words now…

I love how he says the day I stopped… Because, ultimately change happens in an instant. We decide (that’s the hardest part) and then we fight like hell for the rest of our life to back our decision – unless, of course, it’s not a worthwhile one.

But we all know pursuing our health and fitness goals certainly is. Or to borrow from Mike Tyson — we all know sticking to this health and fitness shit is worthwhile. (Pardon my French!)

That day Mike Tyson decided he was going to be the best in the world. That he’d do whatever it took to be the best. That’s he’d employ an army of people to support him. That he’d be the baddest man on the planet.

What would happen if you decided right now that you’re not going to eat any junk food for the rest of this week?

What would happen if you decided right now that you’re going to exercise every day for the rest of this week?

What would happen to your psyche if you decided on something right now that would benefit you?

And the best part? The best part is that when we do things that benefit us, we feel a lot better too.

We feel like the…

Champion of the World!!!

This one thing I learned from the NYC Marathon is critical to success

Monday, November 7th, 2011

Yesterday, I watched the NYC marathon from a bunch of different points along the 26.219 route, however, I purposely saved the finish line for my last stop.

People crossing the finish line 8+ hours into the marathon, in the dark, were not running through the finish line. They were barely jogging. Many were walking, usually limping, and in a lot of visible discomfort.

So, as I was watching person after person cross the finish line with their arms up in triumph between 5:30 and 6:15 PM, a recurring thought kept hitting me.

These people resolved that no matter what, they were going to finish. No matter how long it took them, they’d cross that line.

In the journey of life, there aren’t many cut and dry markers like start and finish lines. However, there are a ton of marathons we choose to enter (whether we realize it or not).

For the sake of consistency, let’s define a marathon in life as a process.

—> The reason why getting the body we want is so hard in 6 words is because: It’s a process. Not an event.

Dating is a process. Building a company is a process. Establishing trust is a process. And getting the body we want is a process.

Events, on the other hand, are easier to manage, pay for and get excited about.

Processes, though, build results for the long haul.

Hopefully, whatever marathons we choose to pursue are worthwhile ones. And when we focus on the benefit, it’s easier to get through the inevitable discomfort we’ll face. Of course, having support makes all of the difference – and in fact, every runner I asked post marathon said the cheering of the crowd is what kept them going.

But here’s the critical mistake so many people make: If you’re going to decide to start a marathon, decide up front that you will not quit when the going gets tough.

No matter what it takes, fight like heck to back that commitment up.

One famous couple’s counselor asked a simple question that allowed her to have a flawless track record.

The one question that set her apart and made her very successful was this:

At the very beginning, before the first session, she’d ask her clients: ‘Are you considering divorce?’

If the answer was yes, she refused to take them on.

Why? Because there really aren’t degrees of commitment. As soon as we consider giving up on anything, we are looking for reasons to support that decision.

If we, instead, commit to a project, or mission, or marriage, then we look for reasons to stick with it.

And when it comes to our health and fitness the reasons to stick with it are literally endless.

P.S. As a product of divorced parents, I am in no way, shape or form advocating that parents should stick to their marriage, if it’s not working. I think the best thing parents can do for their children is be happy themselves (whether it’s together or not).

Got people in your life who think they know how you should lose weight? Read this…

Friday, October 21st, 2011

For as long as there have been people trying to lose weight, there are friends and family members telling them how to lose the weight. 9 times out of 10, these people are more over weight themselves or have no idea what they’re talking about or (most importantly) haven’t lost weight, and kept it off.

And for as long as there are people who want to lose weight, there have been weight loss schemes – ya know, those “lose 30 pounds in 3 days” type of programs.

The ones that ask us to follow a diet that we can’t follow for the rest of our lives. Why bother starting ANY diet if we can’t follow it for the rest of our life? (I remind you: when will you stop brushing your teeth?)

I’m so passionate about this because unless it’s healthy, sustainable and realistic we’re just wasting our time. I’ve been living what I teach since I was in 4th grade, literally. (That should prove just how sustainable it is.)

**

However, humans will always be humans and some just can’t help themselves — they go from one diet to the next without ever sticking to any of them. Why? Because they’re not sustainable in the first place…

And…

…when it comes down to it, most people rather hope and wish than actually take action. Besides, they can’t fail if they don’t take action, right?

They don’t have to face any discomfort if they’re constantly trying something new. Before they’re even able to roll their sleeves up, they’re already onto the next one.

There’s a reason why 10% of all bestselling books are diet books.

Here’s a post I wrote about why I’ll never write a bestselling diet book.

In life, I’ve learned that everyone has two businesses.

They have their own business and your business! Everyone thinks they know exactly how you should live or exactly the type of diet you should be following or exactly the type of person you should be dating or exactly the thing you should do or how you should be raising your kids and on and on.

Remember this, though. As one of my mentors told me: “If you give 1000 monkeys each a piano, one of them is bound to play the first four notes of Beethoven’s symphony.”

When choosing who to listen to a track record of consistent success is far important than a big score.

Nothing beats the tried and true rules of consistency. Nothing!

“There are two mistakes one can make along the road to truth. Not going all the way, and not starting.” – Siddartha Guatama

Starting is certainly hard. It requires a lot of courage. But starting isn’t nearly as hard as keeping on going is.

Anyone can start a “diet.”

We all know people like this…

One month they’re eating ONLY xyz. “Nope, I can’t eat any of that. It’s not a part of my plan!” The next month, they’re eating only what they were just
avoiding the month before. The next month, they’re only eating grapefruits.

“Adam this is working so well! I lost 2 pounds in the first 2 days! Can you believe this?!?!”

The next month, “The best part about this is that I can eat as much fat as I want AND lose weight?!” as they’re chomping down on a triple bacon cheeseburger.

The next month, “Ya know, I’ve decided I’m going to become a vegetarian. I’m never going to eat meat again!”

The next month…

I can keep going if you’d like??

We all know these people…

…they go from one shiny new fad diet to the next without ever sticking with ANYTHING.

Why?

Few reasons:

1. Consistency isn’t sexy (but it’s ridiculously effective). And because it’s not “sexy” or the “it” diet of the moment, people might feel bored or even left out while some of their friends are eating “cookies” for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Because of this, they’re always in search of the newest fad diet, instead of focusing on what actually works.

We all know deep down, the secret to success is —> doing the right things over and over and over and over again. And doing the right things over and over and over and over again.

No matter what diet we follow, or what ‘magic pill’ we take (they don’t exist!), if we want to be successful, eventually, we’re going to have to do the actual work.

And the actual work means eating right, eating less, and moving more…consistently.

There is no escaping this!

We can’t escape the work if we want results. While the majority of people are searching for the “latest and greatest fad diet” we’re doing the right things day in and day out. While the majority of people are searching for the “new and shiny diet” we’re losing weight week after week.

2. The temptation to quit is greatest right before the results happen.

Why? Because right before we see results, we have to push through some discomfort. (And our natural tendency is to remove that discomfort. How? We quit the program! “Eh, this isn’t working two weeks into a program,” we rationalize. But then we’re right back to square one, of course.)

Change by nature is uncomfortable.

If we’re doing the same things we used to do, we’re not changing and therefore we won’t feel any discomfort. Discomfort means we’re doing things DIFFERENTLY, and therefore getting closer to where we want to be.

Discomfort IS our compass.

We can’t escape the discomfort we have to endure, we just can’t. Nor can we escape the day to day consistency we have to stick to, which isn’t sexy whatsoever – even though, it’s ridiculously effective!

And because it’s so easy to avoid the inevitable – being consistent and sticking with a sensible eating and exercise plan – I know (in fact, I’m 1000% convinced – though I’m admittedly biased) daily and personal accountability and support is what makes ALL of the difference.

So let’s embrace the consistency for the rest of today and this week.

And when it feels a little boring, that’s our time to lean in even more and make more change happen. Because like our moods, we have ups and downs. And when we’re up, it feels easy.

I’ll remind you once again, “There are two mistakes one can make along the road to truth. Not going all the way, and not starting.”

Let’s have a great week!

Actually, don’t have a wonderful week…create one!
