I, like many others, would have weight fluctuations, and I was almost back at my highest weight. Like other folks who have been in the “lose weight/gain it back” circle, I’d tried everything: trackers, WeightWatchers, meal replacements, and crazy diets. I’d lose 10, gain 15, and do this over and over. I knew what food was better for my body. Still, I just kept going for the junk, usually with a mindset of “I deserve this” or lamenting that I had no willpower.
I found MyBodyTutor when I stumbled across one of Adam’s articles. It caught my eye because it was more than just the “eat this, not that” approach to weight loss.
At the time, my company was instituting “get healthy” incentives to lower our insurance costs. I needed to lose 5% of my body weight to get the initial incentive, and MyBodyTutor sounded like a good way to get there. My plan was to do the program for a month or two, lose the 5%, and then take the skills I’d learned and be on my merry way (since the program seemed like an expensive investment).
I was nervous to start because I had a girls’ wine weekend, travel, and holidays all in the next few months. Adam paired me with my awesome tutor Sarah, and I was surprised when it wasn’t a plan of “here’s exactly what you should eat.” It was more of a “why are you eating that?” approach, which was important because I didn’t understand how I was using food to smother feelings.
The weight started to come off at a slow, manageable pace, and I really started to think about why I was eating the way I did. I started trying to listen to my body for what it actually wanted, and I saw that I did a lot of boredom and stress eating. I noticed my food consumption was strongly based on emotion instead of hunger. And god bless my tutor; I would want to argue back, and she kindly helped me realize why I was really reaching for that cookie. The non-indulgence cookies, that is, not the amazing cookie I would remember later.
Before I knew it, I’d actually lost weight, even during the holidays! And I didn’t feel deprived! This was something that was working, so I decided to stick with it. I wasn’t tracking calories or macros, only where my mind was and the “why” of eating something. I wasn’t dieting. I was implementing a lifestyle change.
After losing 38 pounds, here I am. With everything that was going on in my life, I lost weight! I had been in a bad wreck, lost my dog, and started a new job. There were low times and good times. I traveled to some very food-centric locations (hello Rome!) and still lost weight while enjoying the local dishes. I never felt deprived.
MyBodyTutor helped me realize food won’t solve the problem, that there’s no such thing as perfection, and that all you need to worry about is making progress. And I learned to allow myself to “face my stuff, not stuff my face.”
And if you ask any of my friends, I did not become that person who only eats vegetables and obsesses about everything I eat. I enjoy food but try to do it mindfully. A life without indulgences just isn’t worth it! And getting to that point was the best part of this investment. I can’t thank Adam and my tutor Sarah enough!
