My name is Michelle and I am a Certified Health Coach from Health Coach Institute and a Certified Detoxification Specialist from the International School of Detoxification.

Whew, that’s a mouthful!

My approach to coaching is a bit different than most and that all stems from my own experience with a scary diagnosis at the age of 20.

From the time I can remember I was dieting. The first unhealthy memory I have of myself and food was me sitting at the kitchen table at eight years old feeling sad and polishing off a family size bag of chips.

Then came the immediate guilt of having ate my way through my sorrows when my mom exclaimed “What are you doing eating that whole bag of chips!?”

From that point on I struggled with being overweight.

I was once a happy little kid but something had changed in me and I couldn’t put my finger on it.

All I could focus on was the weight I had gained and how to get rid of it, and I felt worse and worse about myself each time I tried and failed.

And I had tried everything: LA Weight Loss, Weight Watchers, the Eat-Salad-All-Day-And-Binge-At-Night Diet, The-Eat-Small-Snacks-Every-2-to-3-Hours Diet, Calorie Counting, The Atkins Diet, The South Beach Diet, The Aloe Diet, Low-Carb, Low-Fat, High-Protein, Slim-Fast, Weight Watchers again…

You name it. I did it.

But nothing seemed to work and stick.

Then I got the news: I had Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis.

Hashi-who-da-what?

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: the autoimmune version of hypothyroidism.

Oh yeah, and I was only 20.

And the delivery method wasn’t very fun either.

I had just gotten back from a summer abroad, so high on life, losing weight this time and feeling great! (Maybe it has something to do with the GMO ban…)

Then I go into this sterile doctor’s office and while getting an ultrasound on my thyroid, the doctor says “Whoa! Your thyroid looks like Swiss cheese!” and I almost cried right there on the spot.

Then he proceeded to tell me I would have to take synthetic hormones for the rest of my life and eventually my thyroid would disintegrate.

I was only 20 and I thought my life was over!

Something about someone else telling me how my whole life would turn out flipped a switch in me.

From that moment on, I was determined to find another way.

I started with the Paleo Diet, eliminating things from my diet that were possible triggers for hypothyroid symptoms like fatigue, depression, and weight gain, started feeling better.

I was at a healthy weight, but hit a plateau, and I started gaining it back.

Enter the alternative health world: I found myself exploring the reality that food and all of its parts (nutrients, compounds, macronutrients, micronutrients, and the other things like pesticides and chemical additives) all directly correlated to how I felt, my overall health, and my weight.

I did a Raw Vegan detox with herbs and minerals to cleanse my body and was able to get off of my thyroid medication.

But the story doesn’t end there.

I still struggled with body image distortion: thinking I was fat in a size two, and eventually gained all of the weight back.

That’s when I decided I needed to do something different.

So I decided to enroll in a Health Coaching program: to discover what it was that truly was holding me back from sticking to a healthy lifestyle.

What I found was that my disease or my weight wasn’t the main issue.

They were just the post signs: the warning signs that I was neglecting what my true issue was…

Being unhappy with the way I was living my life.

I had goals and dreams and aspirations, but I was living my life on the safe route:

I got good grades in school and college, pleased everyone with how smart I was, and got accepted into one of the most competitive graduate programs at NYU.

I was making everyone else proud and happy with how accomplished I was becoming, but I wasn’t following my own bliss: what made me really happy.

Once I realized this and began to face my feelings toward living this way, forgive others for not knowing how to help me, and started living a more positive life, everything became easier.

Temptations I once had vanished. Things that were so difficult before, like working out or eating healthy became easier: and instead of being roadblocks, they became the clear path toward my end goal.

I was happy, healthy, and alive. And I loved it!

I finally found what worked for me, and I never looked back.
