Can't vs. Want

I just got off the phone with a journalist who's interested in doing a story about our program. While it's always nice when journalists reach out to me, it's never a sure thing until it's written, and published.

One day, I'll share the story of how a major newspaper contacted me 3 months after I started MBT, requesting an interview. She interviewed me for a full hour on the phone and was really excited about the story ideas she had. Obviously, I was extremely excited as this newspaper is as big as it gets. Unfortunately, her editor didn't want to run it because MBT was in its infancy stage.

Anyway, after this journalist interviewed me today, she politely asked if I could give her some pointers, etc. "Of course. I live for this stuff!" I said.

After we were going back and forth for a little while, I asked her something and she replied with, "I can't..."

I said, "You can't?"

"Or, you don't want to? Big difference."

It was like a light bulb went off. She thanked me for challenging her. It was almost as if she was doing the Robert Dinero: "You...you...you're good."

So, next time you find yourself saying, "I can't," say "I don't want to," instead.

It automatically forces us to ask ourselves a tough question or two. It puts the pressure back on us - which is what we all need.
