Gretchen Rubin

I realized that it’s easier to be happier when you’re fit, but it’s also easier to be fit when you’re happy. Everything impacts everything. So I started studying happiness and came across Gretchen Rubin’s blog before she had even published a book on the subject.

Since then, she’s gone on to write several New York Times bestsellers, including The Happiness Project,Happier at Home, Better than Before, and The Four Tendencies. I’m a huge fan of her writing, and I’m so excited to learn how she stays fit.

What does a typical day of eating look like for you?

I eat a “chaffle” (cheese-waffle) for breakfast. The rest of the day might be a Cobb or Greek salad, burger, salmon, tuna fish (no bread), roast broccoli or cauliflower…that sort of thing.

What do you eat when you’re on the run?

A handful of almonds.

Let’s say you got to choose your last meal on Earth, what would it be?

Everything on the menu from Winstead’s, my favorite diner in my hometown of Kansas City

What is your go-to comfort food?

Eggs in all their forms.

How do you recover after indulgent eating?

I know it may sound bonkers, but I don’t really ever indulge with food.

How do you find time for fitness?

I put it on the calendar.

What do you like to do for exercise?

I do two sessions of high-intensity strength-training each week, and on the other days I go for a long walk.

What are your 3 favorite workout songs?

I don’t listen to music while exercising.

After a challenging day, how do you destress?

I love to read, so I’ll read. If I’m really stressed, I’ll re-read a favorite book. If I’m super-stressed, I’ll re-read a favorite children’s book.

How do you treat yourself after a long week?

Read! Or watch re-runs of The Office, Game of Thrones…

Do you have a nighttime ritual?

Not really a ritual. But I am zealous about getting enough sleep.

Is there a motto or saying you say to yourself that helps you?

“Be Gretchen”

Is there anything you’re working on changing?

I’ve started experimenting with taking a daily nap when my schedule permits it. I love my naps!

What is something you know about health/fitness you wish you knew 10 years ago?

Can I change this to 15 years ago? In that case, I would wish I’d realized how much happier and healthier I’d feel if I gave up eating carbs.
