Note from Sarah: Unfortunately, I had to use a photo that was taken 6 weeks after starting MBT, and at that point I had already dropped 12 lbs. I was so ashamed of how I looked when I was at my heaviest that I didn't take any photos during that time.
1) How did you find out about us?
I discovered MBT through Google. I was searching for a program with built-in accountability, and not in the form of accountability groups – I already knew that didn't work for me. I was specifically searching for a program with a coach or a guide or a wizard of some sort who could help me stay on track, and MBT was one of the first results on Google that caught my eye.
2) What have you tried in the past?
I spent a ton of time and money in the past on various programs, diets, and products to lose weight, some of which were downright mentally and physically unhealthy. I was an avid user of MyFitnessPal for a long time and developed a troubling obsession with counting calories. I used my Fitbit stats to try to exercise away extra calories. I went vegan for a while and then did keto for a while. I spent money on expensive protein shakes, pre-workout powders, meal replacements, and waist trainers. I was even a Beachbody coach for a few months before I realized how toxic it was. Some things “worked” briefly, but none of them were actually addressing the real problem and therefore none of the results ever lasted.
3) What was the main reason, doubt or insecurity that was holding you back from signing up?
I had no doubts about signing up. By the time I found MBT, I had tried so many other things that I felt like I had nothing to lose by trying – well, nothing to lose except the extra weight. I wanted to lose weight for my wedding, and I knew I couldn't keep trying and failing to do it on my own. The only thing that gave me slight hesitation was the cost, but I rationalized it by categorizing it as a wedding expense. I thought, “I'll give it one month, and if it doesn't work then at least I know I tried.”
4) What was life like before you started working with MBT?
By the time I signed up for MBT, I only had 7 months before my wedding. I had already been trying to lose weight on my own for ages, with zero success. I was stuck in a rut of yo-yo dieting. I would lose a couple pounds and then put them right back on, sometimes with interest. I was incredibly uncomfortable with the way I looked, and being the heaviest I'd ever been, I also didn't feel physically comfortable in my body either. The extra weight in my neck and face was causing me to snore heavily at night, which was constant irritation on my throat and was affecting the quality of my sleep. I was tired, out of shape, and deeply unhappy with myself. My biggest fear was getting to my wedding day without losing anything and then permanently hating the way I looked in my wedding photos.
5) What were your hopes before joining?
I started MBT with the hopes that I was finally going to find a way of eating well without restriction. Calorie counting and limiting food groups was getting me nowhere. I was ready to get help from a person who could not only give me guidance, but also fully understand what I had gone through to get where I was. Ultimately, I was hoping for two things: 1) To be heard. 2) To get help.
6) How is MBT different from the billion other companies out there?
MBT is different because shame is not part of the program. I had good days and bad days, and my tutor was supportive on both. No foods were off-limits, which is important to me since I had spent so much time being restrictive. Because I was logging meals instead of calories, I started paying more attention to the foods I ate and the portions, instead of the numbers they equated to. By doing this, I was slowly building my own habits of healthful eating, as opposed to following someone else's meal plan for a predetermined number of weeks and then abandoning ship. My tutor was there everyday to make sure I continued to work on those habits, provide help when I needed it, and provide feedback when it was called for.
7) Where are you now?
I ended up losing 32 lbs for my wedding! I am so happy with how I looked for my wedding day. Once the weight started coming off, I immediately started feeling better and felt more capable to exercise. After the first ten pounds, I stopped snoring and was able to sleep peacefully again. After losing twenty, I was able to wear a lot of clothes that I hadn't fit into for over a year. And at thirty, I really stopped being so afraid of cameras. Because of this program, I don't think I'll ever go back to counting calories, and for that, I'm forever grateful to have made this decision.
8) Anything else worth sharing? Anything that you think would encourage someone to sign up?
If you've already poured tons of time, money, and energy into things that didn't work, MBT is the one to say, “Just one more try.” It's the most mentally healthy program I've ever done, and because I did most of the work myself, I'm leaving the program knowing what works for me – because I did it. My tutor was there to get me started and assist me at every turn, but I'm the one who had to do the work and make it happen, showing me that I CAN actually do it.
What did you say to yourself as you were reading Sarah's story?
It's fascinating when we start to notice our own behavior. Typically, we distance ourselves from that person. We find something they have that we don't. We make them into something other than an ordinary, regular person. Then, we create an excuse for why we can't achieve the same level of success.
The most important thing to realize: Whatever anyone else has done or become, you can do or become as well, with the right support, guidance and accountability.
