Hello! My name is Kristen and I am a Master Certified Health and Wellness Coach. At the ripe age of 18, I was diagnosed with Graves disease. I was truly unaware of the implications of having a chronic autoimmune disease, but then again what does anybody really know at the age of 18. I was urged to undergo Radioactive Iodine to obliterate my thyroid shortly after my diagnosis due to how rapidly my health was declining.

Totally unaware that I was going to have to be on medication for the rest of my life I partook in the recommended treatment and left the hospital none the wiser. A few short months after this I quickly found out how detrimental it was to live without a thyroid and began sleeping 18 hours a day and gaining weight rapidly. I sought out the help of dozens of endocrinologists without any true help from them to manage my hypothyroidism, symptoms, and weight gain. While all my blood work came back “fine” I was unable to focus, had terrible brain fog, no energy, continued to gain weight, and felt sick 24/7. I was sick and tired of feeling sick and tired.

After about 8 years of seeking treatment, I was able to find a great endocrinologist who helped me lose weight and get control over my post-ablative hypothyroidism by changing my medication dosage to get my thyroid labs optimal and adding in another medication to my routine. I spent countless hours searching through online support groups, reading articles, and following holistic doctors and practitioners. I went on to lose 60 pounds, get pregnant, have my daughter, and then gain 80 pounds through the course of pregnancy and postpartum. I knew I had to take control of my life. I had all this knowledge but wasn’t able to do anything with it to help myself. I knew I was missing a piece to the puzzle.

I was finally able to do more research and seek out help with balancing my hormones, change my eating, discover food sensitivities, improve my gut health, exercise in a way that supported my body without causing excessive inflammation, and support my body through the appropriate supplements and whole foods. Most importantly, I learned to take control of my own thoughts, feelings, and actions. I was so focused on the physical aspect of it all I wasn’t giving enough attention to the mental aspect. Through this journey, I gained the most control over my body that I have ever had and was able to lose over 100 pounds and keep the weight off.

After accomplishing this I knew guiding others to their best health was what I wanted to do. Health coaching is my calling - I am determined to support others in the process of healing themselves. I was originally obtaining my bachelor’s degree in business management because it was the “safe” thing to do. I mean, who wouldn’t hire somebody with a BA in business management? I knew deep down that business wasn’t my calling and I instead decided to live my life by the quote “Choose a job you love, and you'll never have to work a day in your life.” If I was going to go down, I was going to go down in flames doing what I loved and helping people become advocates for themselves!

I switched my bachelor’s degree from business management to Health and Wellness and graduated in May of 2021 with honors and a 3.92 GPA. Right after graduation I enrolled in a health coaching class and became a Master Certified Health Coach. I truly believe there is a disconnect in the health care world between what patients need and what they get from health care providers. I want to be here to help individuals navigate their journey and the unknown with far less stress and tears than I had to navigate my own. I've lived the struggle and know how important it is to change how we respond to food, cravings, and the emotional reasons why we eat.

Why I chose MBT:

It has been a very long road to wellness for me. I have experienced all the emotions on that journey. The happiness, sadness, grief, empowerment, and all the things in between. There is a misconception that if you just exercise you will lose weight. If you just eat better the weight will come right off. If you combine exercise and eating right there is nothing else you need to do beyond that. I am here to say that isn’t always the case. There is a lot of mental and emotional work that needs to be done in between it all. MBT was created to make the coaching experience personal and effective.

I love MBT because there is no one way of doing things. They don’t try to fit every client into the same box. They know that each client needs their own personalized approach to help them along their journey and they leave it up to the coaches and the client to determine the best course of action for that journey. I decided to become a coach and part of MBT so that I can help my clients by providing daily feedback and customized programs to help each and every client develop new habits that are sustainable while helping them address the mental and emotional side of their journey that may be holding them back from success.
