My relationship with exercise:
Growing up I really did not like sports or exercise. I was uncoordinated and uninterested in athletics —and that’s putting it mildly. Physical education was consistently my worst grade on my report card in middle and high school.
When I got to high school, all my friends seemed to be joining the cross country running team. So as peer pressure goes at that age, I joined too. The coach was really nice and the team was really welcoming… and the running… well it was AWFUL. We ran 3.1 miles for competitions, and my motto used to be “after one mile I feel like walking, after two miles I feel like stopping, and after three miles I feel like passing out.” Many races I would be one of the last people on our team to finish.
It was not until years later towards the end of college that I had anything resembling a consistent exercise routine. Today, I can honestly say that I ENJOY running. I’ve completed five half marathons and one full marathon so far- all by my own choosing. I’m not telling you this to brag (and DON’T WORRY, I won’t make you run —I know it’s not for everyone). I’m telling you this because if it’s possible for me to change my relationship with exercise and health this much, then I know it’s POSSIBLE FOR YOU too!
My relationship with food:
My relationship with food has evolved a lot overtime too. I used to get so confused by all the nutrition info and fad diets I would hear about growing up. It felt like everywhere I looked there were people trying to give me advice on how to eat and what workouts were the best. It was so difficult to know whose advice to trust & where to look for reliable information. This, along with my love of helping people, drove me into the field of nutrition. I successfully completed my education at the University of Connecticut in 2018 and now hold a B.S. in Nutritional Science.
I thought a degree in Nutrition would allow me to answer food-related questions for myself and others. While it definitely cleared up the science behind WHAT to eat and HOW nutrients work in the body, it didn't address WHY we sometimes eat for reasons other than hunger, and why so many of us struggle with our relationship with food.
The deeper I got into my nutrition studies, the more shame and confusion I felt about the fact that I could easily eat a whole box of cereal in one sitting or the fact that I constantly craved milkshakes even though I knew exactly how bad they were for me. I was consumed by the feeling that I had no self-control, and it was taking a significant toll on my self-esteem.
Late night google searches in an attempt to help myself led me to MyBodyTutor. What stood out to me about this program was that they were offering personal, daily accountability backed by sound nutrition recommendations. So, I joined as a client to help me figure out how to have a healthy relationship with food.
I came back to MyBodyTutor, this time to coach, because I realized how much impact this program had on my life, and I wanted to share that with others. MBT taught me how my own thinking was limiting me. It addresses how to change your habits and notice patterns in yourself. It challenged me to lean into discomfort as a way to grow and push myself. And it does all this in a highly personalized way. These are skills that are rarely taught or talked about, but they’re ones that will change your relationship with food/health in a permanent, meaningful way. Overtime, you’ll see how they also apply to other aspects of your life —career, relationships, self-confidence, mindset. I have seen firsthand how this program can change your relationship with food/exercise/weight and the way you think about your life. On a little less serious of a subject, here are some fun facts about me:
(1) I travel whenever I can. I've currently been to 42 of 50 U.S. States.
(2) I almost always have a half finished cup of coffee near me... on my desk, on my kitchen counter, in my car...
(3) My favorite animal is the orangutan.
(4) I love to do DIY home improvement and decorating projects.
(5) I moved to New Mexico last year from Connecticut.
