The Problem

Why it Worked (in her words)

For the better part of my adult life, I have been a major over-eater. I was a very athletic kid and we ate healthy foods in my home so I didn't see the effects of my crazy lack of portion control until I was an adult and my metabolism slowed down. Throughout college my weight spiked up and down very quickly. I developed major body image issues and a very negative relationship with food. I have used every excuse in the book to justify eating whatever I wanted; good days to celebrate/bad days to comfort. I frequently consumed so much food that I would be physically in pain which would lead to feelings of upset and disappointed with my lack of control.

I don't normally have trouble admitting I need help but for some reason I really struggled to do this on my own. Adam's emails implying that if I could do it on my own I already would have were obviously accurate but they annoyed the hell out of me. I knew a lot about diet and exercise and was determined to force it to work one of these days. As an actress, my image is always part of the discussion. I embraced denial until I was called in for "Chubby Girl" on a popular television show and that I couldn't ignore. I did lose 10 pounds on my own and then quickly swung back to binge eating and gained half of it back in a few days so I finally decided to give MBT a shot.

I was very motivated for the first month and found it very easy to follow the plan "perfectly". The second month I found those compulsions sneaking back in every now and then and when I gave in to them I would have the urge to quit. One of the hardest lessons I've learned working with Adam is that "perfection" is not the goal. I tend to bounce back and forth between extremes and finding that balance was difficult.

On a deeper level I knew that there would be a light at the end of the tunnel. I knew that lying on my daily reports was a waste of time and money and quitting would certainly lead nowhere. It was tough but I made myself stick it out and eventually uncovered the emotional triggers that lead me to lose control!

Having to track not only my meals but how much sleep I was getting and really facing how much stress I would put my mind through with my insane work schedule uncovered patterns as well. I have since made some major changes in how much I will let myself schedule into a week. I'm putting my health and peace of mind first and it's making a huge difference in my ability to exercise self-control.

After working with MBT, I did reach my weight goal; not because of crazy restrictions or 5-hour workouts, but because I learned how to consistently eat healthfully. I learned that going off the rails is fleeting. I learned that I really do feel best when I make time for myself. I have created new habits with food. (I also completed a marathon - something I've been meaning to do for the last 10 years.)
