My doubt - I thought my eating habits were decent, but my sweet tooth, especially after dinner, often got the best of me. There was nothing quite like indulging in dark chocolate and cognac to unwind after a long day at work. Deep down, I knew I needed to reassess my definition of “healthy eating,” but mentally, I was not ready to let go of those comforting habits, especially in a house where those habits were standard practice!
My struggle - in the competitive dance world, I transitioned to a new age bracket (I am in my mid-50’s now) and competing against dancers much younger and toner than myself. The fear of whether my time had passed crept in, and I questioned whether I should hang up my dancing shoes for good. It is a very challenging struggle to reconcile my passion for dance with the doubts about my abilities to keep going.
I never believed in any specific diet. In the past, I have mainly attempted to get fit by counting calories, but without a clear understanding of how much I should be eating. This quickly became frustrating, as my body refused to badge, leaving me disheartened.
But how could it be? I am Italian and very used to a healthy Mediterranean lifestyle. Have I lost it since moving to the US, where food is so different? Or perhaps my physical activity approach was too one-dimensional, heavily focused on dance practice, perfecting for competitions, without incorporating other forms of exercise. Again, why? I have always been in sports at competitive levels and taught yoga and pilates for a long time. Yet, I couldn’t help myself. I blamed it on my heavy schedule at work!
